Cows were scary at the beginning of the semester, but now they look like this to me!
Shaivism is one of the major traditions within Hinduism that reveres Shiva as the Supreme Being. Yesterday we went to a temple in Godaulia, Varanasi which is of the Vira Shaivism or Lingayatism sect of Shaivism.
In our Culture and Practice class we have been discussing colonizing of non-north Indian populations in Varanasi, particularly how and why they stay separated from the rest of Varanasi's population. For example, most don't speak Hindi, but prefer to continue speaking their native tongue.
Varanasi truly is the ultimate pilgrimage site
Here are some photos of our first visit to Varanasi's famous Dashashwamedh ghat
With our program directors Rahul and Lara we went on a sunrise boat ride down the Ganga to discuss the historic significance of the structures on the ghats
For my gender studies course, we went on a field visit to Panini Kanya Mahavidyalaya
Varanasi, I'm slowly learning, is a living breathing place.
One of the highlights of my semester has definitely been my culture in practice class.
Exploring the ghats in the wee hours of the morn is a must.
