And My Journey Begins! (Sort of...)
HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYONE!! I hope that everyone’s New Year will be as exciting as mine, because in a few weeks I’ll be off to China! *Whoot Whoot* I will be studying at the Shanghai University of Finance and Economics, in one of the biggest and most internationally renowned cities in the world! I will see how China interacts on an international business scale, make new friends, and travel my homeland. That’s right! As a transatlantic adoptee, I will be traveling back to where I was born and experience the culture of my people! How exciting!! As I have already been to China once, I am not as nervous as I once was, in case anyone was wondering. However, last time I went to China I went to Beijing – apparently that’s quite a bit different from Shanghai, and I guess they have quite a rivalry between the two cities?! I guess I’ll have to check that out once I get there ;)
It’s going to be hard; I’m not going to pretend that it will be a walk in the park. I’m going to miss my boyfriend, my family, and my friends back in the United States, but luckily some of them will be coming to visit me and I can show them around my second home! At the end of the semester, my parents want to come over and bring me to where I was born… I’m excited and a bit nervous about that, but it’s a journey I’m willing to take! How will I fit in with the other students? How will I fit in with people who look like me, and how different will I be? What kind of turn will my self-identity search take? What will I learn from being in China for such a long time, and what will I take away from it?
During my study abroad experience, I hope to not only get in touch with my heritage, but I also hope to experience a new academic lifestyle. What is it like to be a student in China? What is it like to have classes with boys?! (I’ve gone to an all women’s institute for almost seven years now) Well, stay tuned for the next few months and I’ll let you know how this epic trip unfolds!
