Spring 16

Caitlin Favreau

Greetings! My name is Caitlin Favreau, or Catey. I am a junior at Mount Holyoke College studying International Relations with a national security focus, and I am minoring in Economics. I am a huge athlete - I dance, play rugby, swim, and am an avid gym fanatic! I love learning new languages, meeting new people, and going sight-seeing (which is one of the big reasons as to why I can't wait to go to Shanghai!)

This will be my second trip back to China - the first time was a few summers ago with my mother where we travelled around the Beijing area. My adventures in China are particularly important, as I was born in Hunan. During my independent travels, I plan to go back and experience what my hometown is like. As I am adopted, I have always seen the Chinese culture through foreigner eyes, thus making my desire to learn as much as I can about my heritage even stronger. Especially since I began learning Chinese traditional dance when I was 10 and integrated into the Chinese culture since I was 3, I have always dreamed about going back to China as many times as I could. I have always been involved in a multicultural environment, as my parents knew that it would be important to me especially as an adult. Because of this, I do not believe that the Chinese culture is too far off from what I am used to, though this is definitely an interesting experience!

I think that different cultures are incredibly interesting to learn, so I am beyond excited to study abroad this semester! I hope that my frequent blog entries will give you some insight as what it is like to be a transatlantic adoptee, as well as what it is like overall as an Asian in general, in China! We, Asian Americans, can go through some interesting experiences when our two cultures collide, so I hope that you will find what I have to say interesting :)

Friendships from Abroad

Sights and traveling are fun and amazing, because the likelihood of you ever going to these places again with the same freedom, ability, and access to time can sometimes be pretty slim.
